Nicosia is the capital city of Cyprus and with a rising population this ancient, yet cosmopolitan city should be on every visitor’s agenda as it provides a host of activities to engage. A bustling metropolis, it is strategically located within the centre of the island and provides easy access to other towns and cities throughout the island.
The city is steeped in ancient history. Within the city itself is the original ancient old walled city, which was built by the Venetians in the 16th century to withstand an expected invasion by the Turks in 1570. Famagusta Gate, one of the original entrances to the old city is now a cultural centre and the venue for exhibitions, plays and concerts.
Whilst in Nicosia visit the Archbishop’s Palace; the official residence of the Archbishop of Cyprus. Archbishop’s Palace houses three art galleries including the Byzantine Museum, which hosts a mesmerising collection of Byzantine Icons and paintings. The Cyprus Museum is also a recommended destination as it is a memorial to Queen Victoria and contains a collection of finds from throughout the island.
The city provides a mix of old and new and for those who just want to partake in retail therapy there is a plethora of shops, restaurants and eateries to discover.
